How ZIP Codes Help Us Send Mail Fast!

The ZIP Code system was created by the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 1963 to make mail faster and more reliable. The name “ZIP” comes from Zone Improvement Plan, and it was chosen because it made mail “zip” through the system!

How ZIP Codes Changed Over Time

  • The Original ZIP Code: The first ZIP Codes were simple—just 5 digits long. They helped guide mail to different areas quickly.
  • ZIP+4 Codes: In 1983, the USPS made the system even better by adding a hyphen and 4 more digits. This made the ZIP Code even more precise, helping us find the right building, block, or organization within a ZIP Code area.
